Paul began playing the Trombone at the age of 11 with the Pontardulais Junior Band. He soon rose through the ranks, under the guidance of its current conductor, Mr Nigel Buist, and entered the Senior Band a year later.

 

He played in all seats in the Trombone Section, and became Principal Trombone at the age of 15. He had a lot of success with the band, particularly with Mr C B Buckley at the helm.

 

In 2002, he was asked to play for the Buy As You View Band, currently ranked number 2 in the world. He won the British Open Championship with them later that year.

 

He remained with them for 3 and a half years, before “returning home” to the Bont Band

.

 

 

 

He has also had wide experience as a Soloist, winning the South Wales Solo Champion Title on several occasions. He also competed in the world renowned BBC Young Musician of the Year and BBC Radio 2 Young Brass Soloist competitions.

Paul is widely regarded as one of the top young trombone players in the country, playing Principal Trombone with the National Youth Brass Band of Wales, Principal Bass Trombone of the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain, Jazz Orchestra of Wales, Wind Orchestra of Wales and Orchestra of Wales.

He is currently training to be a solicitor with a firm in Merthyr Tydfil.

Pontardulais Town Band is his first conducting appointment, and he is relishing the chance to work with so many quality players and friends.
